Sailing vs. Traditional Kariba Houseboats

Houseboats have been the traditional way to Explore Kariba. The Matusadona National Park Shoreline and its wildlife are best experienced from the water where you can  move around more easily to game-view and fish. Houseboats tow tender boats for this purpose,  excursioning from the mother ship whose draft is too deep to cruise the shallows.  Kariba Houseboats have evolved into ever-larger & heavier, cumbersome diesel-burners with proliferating staff & tender boats, limiting their mooring options to deep shoreline drop-offs.  Consequently, they tend to park right next to each other in well known moorings.

Our Wharram Tikki Sailing catamarans offer a totally different approach. Their stability, agility & layout allow us to use them as a single, multifunctional platform for sailing, cooking, eating, relaxing, fishing, swimming & game-viewing. Their shallow (80cm) drafts  allow us to moor overnight far from the crowded, regular houseboat berths and we can set up a table ashore on sandy beaches for wilderness Sundowners and Starlit Dinners. We use next-to-no fuel as we silently glide past noisy houseboats in and out of secluded bays to see the large grey (and other!) animals, fish the shallows, then overnight in spectacular isolation.  We only do private groups and are ideal for self-drivers as our economics are much better than houseboats for small groups (2-6pax). We link up well with the Kariba Ferry as well as the Matusadona Barge; you can sail whilst your car takes the Ferry/Barge.

If you want to really connect with Wild Matusadona, silently, smoke-free and  off the beaten track, you have to Think Outside the (big, steel) Box. Choose Freedom, come sail with us!

OUR STORY

In the late 1980’s, Zimbo adventurer Lance Reynolds invited renowned British Yacht designers James Wharram & Hanneke Boom to sail on Lake Kariba. The 30” Wharram Tikki Catamaran was designed specifically for the Lake out of this expedition and Lance built several of these boats and operated them successfully on the lake.

Tough times hit Zimbabwe Tourism in the early 2000’s and the boats fell into disrepair until in 2024, a series of “only-in-Zimbabwe” conversations resulted in the resurrection of the plan.

We are busy restoring the fleet, along with new-build boats in modern composite materials. Even the original boat builder, Mr  Kingstone Karengeni (now 80) was located and got busy rebuilding Lance’s dream in the Kariba heat. Hours of toil and dust later, we are sure Lance is smiling on us from above as we take the baton from where he left off.  We got this, Lance!
